Description

Who’s in charge here? In the third chapter of the series we cross a line. Until now we named ages after what people made things out of – stone, copper, bronze, iron. From here on, every age is named after whoever is ruling: Persian, Hellenistic, Hasmonean, Roman, Byzantine.

And one small object answers that question instantly: the coin. A coin carries the ruler’s name, his language, his gods, and often his face. It’s a press release you carry in your pocket.

We start with the tiny YEHUD coin in old Hebrew letters, move through Alexander, the Hasmoneans, Rome and the revolt, and end with a cross – the moment the money stops saying who the king is and starts saying what people believe.

Archaeology, Biblical connections and sources, photographs from the field, and Google Earth flights. Classes are for ages 6-14, and the level is geared towards the audience

This class is part of The Museum Guy’s Homeschool History Course – weekly bilingual Zoom classes on Jewish history, archaeology and world history, plus monthly in-person museum meetups around Israel, taught by Nachliel Selavan.
