Linguistically speaking, as I read in a post this morning by<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/shoutout.wix.com\/so\/02OHCSuho\/c?w=0IhxHiULoNWiFgVdFLLUyle92dywOjExOAcT17OC4XQ.eyJ1IjoiaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZmFjZWJvb2suY29tL2hhZ2dhaS5taXNnYXYiLCJyIjoiYjRlNjdkYWMtNDlkMy00NGViLWE2OTItZDdiYmQzMmE1MmQwIiwibSI6Im1haWwiLCJjIjoiNTljYmFhYWQtMDliMy00ZTk4LTlhODctYjY0ZTAxY2UwMzNhIn0\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u> <\/u><\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/shoutout.wix.com\/so\/02OHCSuho\/c?w=0IhxHiULoNWiFgVdFLLUyle92dywOjExOAcT17OC4XQ.eyJ1IjoiaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZmFjZWJvb2suY29tL2hhZ2dhaS5taXNnYXYiLCJyIjoiYjRlNjdkYWMtNDlkMy00NGViLWE2OTItZDdiYmQzMmE1MmQwIiwibSI6Im1haWwiLCJjIjoiNTljYmFhYWQtMDliMy00ZTk4LTlhODctYjY0ZTAxY2UwMzNhIn0\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Prof. Haggai Misgav<\/u><\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-fo2kf\" class=\"\">\u201cav-ram\u201d is combined of the root with the suffix M, like the names Aviam, Bilaam, Amram, etc., the root \u201cAVR\u201d probably means \u201cstrong\u201d, like \u201cabir\u201d (knight, hero) and \u201cShem-ever\u201d, who also stars in the Parasha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-uq0\" class=\"\">The switch from Avram to Avraham moved the emphasis from might and control to creativity and fertility, as well as the ability to contain and provide (raham in Arabic* means plenty, Avraham &#8211; father of plenty).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-7t1oj\" class=\"\">*Arabic is a Semitic language and is therefore a useful source in understanding ancient Semitic languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-5l4ut\" class=\"\">Avraham is the \u201cfather of many nations\u201d and in fact, the largest conflicts in human history have occurred between the three Abrahamic faiths: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. As an Israeli citizen and a native of the Old City of Jerusalem, I understand this conflict from the streets of my childhood. And that takes us to the title of this newsletter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-3t22h\" class=\"\">I believe that understanding Avraham Avinu is key to making progress in the Middle East today. The \u201cAbraham Accords\u201d were named, wisely so, after what we share in common with our Arab-Muslim neighbors. The children of Avraham &#8211; Yitzchak and Yishma\u2019el, must learn to get along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-bdkjd\" class=\"\">Many Israelis are learning spoken Arabic in order to better understand the Middle East. I admit that one year of classes was not enough for me, and I need a lot more practice. But having street signs everywhere is good practice for reading, if not speaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-5nelg\" class=\"\">I read a fascinating book called<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/shoutout.wix.com\/so\/02OHCSuho\/c?w=L_KWx6h6onqSpFechB7SFsNgsqc6XqikcJQ5lA9fD4Y.eyJ1IjoiaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuYW1hem9uLmNvbS9BYnJhaGFtLUpvdXJuZXktSGVhcnQtVGhyZWUtRmFpdGhzL2RwLzAwNjA4Mzg2NjMiLCJyIjoiYjRlNjdkYWMtNDlkMy00NGViLWE2OTItZDdiYmQzMmE1MmQwIiwibSI6Im1haWwiLCJjIjoiNTljYmFhYWQtMDliMy00ZTk4LTlhODctYjY0ZTAxY2UwMzNhIn0\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u> <\/u><\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Abraham-Journey-Heart-Three-Faiths\/dp\/0060838663\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Abraham: A Journey to the Heart of Three Faiths (2005) <\/u><\/a>by Bruce Feiler, in preparation for my tour \u201cAvraham\u2019s Journey: From the Ancient Near East to the Middle East\u201d, which is now offered as a public tour in the Israel Museum (schedule and links below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-94o1a\" class=\"\">\u201cIn this timely, provocative, and uplifting journey, the bestselling author of<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Walking-Bible-Journey-Through-Books\/dp\/0062336509\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u> Walking the Bible<\/u><\/a> searches for the man at the heart of the world\u2019s three monotheistic religions\u2014and today\u2019s deadliest conflicts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-bf29v\" class=\"\">\u201cAt a moment when the world is asking \u201ccan the religions get along?\u201d one figure stands out as the shared ancestor of Jews, Muslims, and Christians. One man holds the key to our deepest fears\u2014and our possible reconciliation. Abraham is that man.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-2enr8\" class=\"\">The opening chapter of the book describes Feiler&#8217;s visit to Jerusalem on the eve of the 6th light of Chanukah &#8211; which on that year was also the last Friday of Ramadan, and also Xmas. He describes in great detail how each religion is preparing for their respective holidays, and the fears some of them have of what the other may do to them&#8230;and yet they all stem from the same religious faith of Avraham &#8211; the Father of Many Nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-ab8h7\" class=\"\">What he doesn\u2019t tell you in the book is that the place he ate that Friday night\u2019s Shabbat dinner was at my parents\u2019 house, in the Old City. I was in high school at the time and I remember being told that our friend Prof. Avner Goren, an archaeologist, was bringing over a guest who is researching a book about Avraham Avinu. My mother later told me that Feiler never heard the story that every kindergarten child in Israel probably knows: Avraham and Sarah\u2019s tent had four entrances in order to welcome guests from the four corners of the earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-460j4\" class=\"\">I would like to invite you to join me on Avraham\u2019s Journey, where I share thoughts, ideas, and discussions with you about the physical and spiritual journey of our Founding Father, or Forefather, Avraham.
